I agree on all of your assertions Robert. Though I wish
someone would come
in to compete with ER/Win feature by feature as an
independent consultant it
is hard to swallow a 4K drop at one time to use ER/Win and
many of my small
clients can't takeover ER/Win diagrams once I am done with
a project, losing
some of the usefulness of using ER/Win for schema lifecycle
maintenance. If
CA dropped the price to be competitive, I'd be one of their
loudest fanboys.

While ERWin is expensive and owned by CA, it is still one of
the best tools
out there. There is also a tool called Case Studio
(http://www
.casestudio.com/enu/default.aspx) that will do multiple
databases.
I have tested it as a low cost alternative for the SIG that
I am a leader of
in Houston. It is actually pretty good. Especially for the
price. Your DB
Designer says it is designed for MySQL. So I do not know
how useful it will
be for MS SQL databases.
The SQL Server built in diagramer is mainly good for adding
the
relationships and naming them.
Visio is a joke.
