Hi Moinak!

Many thanks for getting back to me - it's much appreciated.

I realised shortly after posting that I was using a LiveCD
configuration and that I wouldn't be able to use zfs unless
I was able to modify the image on the usb drive.

Of course, it would be quicker and easier to simply
re-package my existing Solaris PC at home with a larger case
and power supply and install my four (zfs) 300GB drives
connected to an old IDE add-in card that I have - existing
80GB and DVD drives as per a normal Solaris 10 machine and
my 300GB drives devoted to zfs.

I'm running freeNAS at present, and it's nice to know that
the machine and the drives are always present, and on-line.
freeNAS also allows for the drives to be powered-down, to
save energy and to reduce noise and heat. And it boots
simply from a 512MB USB key. My freeNAS box serves both my
Solaris PC and my other PC running that other rubbish from
Microsoft. So, the PCs can sleep or be shut down and my NAS
sits quietly until it's required.

I'm presently playing with installing Nexenta onto my LaCie
8GB drive, as that won't be a LiveCD. Nexenta too has a
script to install to a USB drive - not just a LiveCD image.

As for your dual-slice option, that's something that
occurred to me too last night. My thoughts were that a
LiveCD would configure the system (hostname, ip address,
netmask, startup scripts, vfstab, zfs data, etc) if it found
a config slice. Of course, a booted CD wouldn't find the
configuration slice (unless it was on another drive, such as
a user booting from CD but using a USB key for storage).

In any case, I'll be keeping a keen eye on progress - thanks
to you and your colleagues for your excellent efforts on our
behalf!!

Cheers! Gary
