Good to hear that the ProCurve seems to be a good managed
switch. As the iMac has one gigabit ethernet port, I think,
that will be one of the reasons for getting 40 MBytes/sec
write speed. Also, what's the model of disk inside the iMac?
AFAIK, they use 5400 RPM 2.5 inch laptop disks, and this
will almost certainly be the reason for these speeds. So, I
would say the write speed you have achieved is quite
respectable under the circumstances.

>From what someone told me here (http://breden.org.uk/2008/04/05/home-fileserver-trunkin
g/), unless you have trunking set up with 2+ gigagbit
NICs at each end of the connection, you can actually get
slower speeds than using a simple unmanaged gigabit switch.

With the Mac Pro here, and the ZFS fileserver, both
configured to use trunking with 2 gigabit ethernet NICs
each, I seem to recall getting speeds upto around 80
MBytes/sec sustained, but I can't remember if it was read or
write speed. The URL above might give more info.

Also, the file size being transferred seems to make a
difference. Transferring large files is quicker than lots of
little files.

According to info someone told me, using Jumbo Frames
doesn't increase the transfer speed very dramatically, so
the standard MTU size of 1500 is probably worth sticking
with.

What's your experience with NFS going from a Mac to Solaris?
Most of the stuff I've read into is bad (performance &
secrutiy-wise). I've got to say setting up and using the
CIFS server was a breeze compared to going with NFS. Are
there any other reasons you can think of why I would want to
continue to investigate NFS further or do you think CIFS is
going to be the way to go from here on out?
