Principles of Agile Version Control: From OOD to POB (Part
2)
by Robert Cowham and Brad Appleton
------------------------------------------------------------
Last month we looked at several principles of
object-oriented design and tried to translate them, into
principles of version-control for task-based development
with workspaces, changes, and baselines. This month we
extend our "translation" efforts from OOD
principles to codelines, branching and promotion. The result
is that we expand our scope from task-based development
(TBD) to project-oriented branching (POB).

Improving Application Quality and searching for what’s
broken
by Bob Aiello
------------------------------------------------------------
Software Process Improvement experts often believe that they
know what’s best for you. They are wrong and many of these
efforts are nothing more than management exercises which
yield little real value for the organization. Many
proponents of process improvement frameworks such as the
SEI’s CMM/CMMI, Six Sigma or “lighter” methods such as Agile
and XP all speak as if their methodology is the one true
path to Software Quality. To really improve application
quality you must start with an understanding of what’s
broken.

Managing Vendor Code Customizations with Stream-based SCM -
Why Streams Are Easier than Traditional Branching
by David Thomas
------------------------------------------------------------
Customizing or extending third party "vendor"
source code is becoming increasingly common especially with
the availability of open-source software. Building upon
existing code increases your time to market and lets a group
of experts elsewhere develop the foundation. Vendors
typically provide frequent patches and new features in the
form of vendor releases. Managing the incorporation of
vendor releases alongside customizations requires an
additional layer of configuration management. raditional
branch-based software configuration management (SCM) tools
require an unnecessarily complex branch and merge process.
This article describes how stream-based SCM provides a more
intuitive and efficient parallel development model for
managing customizations to vendor code.

What do Enterprise Architecture principles require of
Configuration Management? - by Charles Edwards
------------------------------------------------------------
We usually think of Configuration Management in the context
of a Software Development Project, but CM also exists in the
context of an Enterprise, having many projects and existing
applications within IT and the Enterprise.
In thinking about Configuration Management best practices, I
wondered if taking the 20 principles used for an Enterprise
Architecture Framework (TOGAF), we could see just how well
Configuration Management stands up to supporting these
general Architectural principles in an Enterprise context.
