- Editors Note
=====================

During a recent interview I realized that the most popular
discussion topic with people who are either new to
configuration and those who have been in the business for a
while is always, "What do you mean by CM." [http://www.
cmcrossroads.com/article/67159] Opinions vary widely,
sometimes boarding on religious fanaticism, but the answer
to that question is always very enlightening and is usually
tied the individuals early experiences. I started CM
Crossroads with the idea in mind that Configuration
Management is a broad discipline involving many, if not all,
the aspects of what many think of today as ALM. Most people,
however, use the term almost interchangeably with version
control which is what really leads to so much confusion when
people start talking about CM.

We'd like to hear your thoughts too. Post your comments in
the discussion threads "What do you mean by CM?"
And if you would like to share your ideas for broadcast in
an upcoming podcast you can leave a message at

identified and include your name phone number to contact
where we can contact you later.

Evolving Beyond Version Control for Agile Development
by Robert Cowham, Brad Appleton and Steve Berczuk
------------------------------------------------------------

This article will look at the development from Version
Control tools to those which can more properly be termed
Configuration Management tools, but particularly focused on
ideas around managing configurations.

 Version Control v. Configuration Management
 by Jim Hickey
------------------------------------------------------------

The terms version control and configuration management are
often used interchangeably, while some view them as separate
disciplines.  In fact, version control capabilities are a
part of a well-defined configuration management process.  We
will explore these related disciplines and show how they can
be applied successfully to problems facing IT professionals
today attempting to manage their application infrastructure.

 CM Crossroads Webcast Series -
Building a CM Platform to Achieve Speed and Control for
Compliance
------------------------------------------------------------
Thursday, June 01, 2006 - 11 AM EDT - 8 AM PDT - 1500 UTC

During this live broadcast, Uttam Narsu and Kurt Sand
discuss the contention between today's need for speed
in product development versus compliance with internal
and external regulations. Despite the ongoing mantra
of "build it better, faster, cheaper', they argue it
is
possible to create synergy between speed and control on
the road to sustainable compliance. They will highlight
examples from which they draw best practice guidelines.
They will also discuss how the right CM platform can
enable fast development, low impact of change and
fine-grained managerial control.

[Road to Quality] Testing vs. Quality Assurance
 by Alan S. Koch
------------------------------------------------------------

"What does your Quality Assurance group do?" I
have asked many executives.
And too often they answer, "QA is responsible for
testing our software to ensure it is ready for
release."
"Anything else?" I push, hoping for more.
But usually, the response is little more than, "Well,
they manage the defect tracking system. What else would they
do?"
What more, indeed!

Whether you are an agile shop or using any other
methodology, achieving results will require either luck or,
more likely, discipline. Far too many shops hope on the
former but the most successful depend on the latter. Keeping
your teams on track is often thankless but necessary. This
month we'll look at ways of staying on the good path and
prevent the slow degradation that causes the problems your
processes were intended to avoid. The discipline to do this
comes from a number of sources.

Moving Management to Benefit Configuration Management Over
Version Control
 by Charles Edwards
------------------------------------------------------------

Often senior managers do not come from a formal development,
technical or coding background. Version control is an easier
concept and this seems to be more readily accepted, but
configuration management is more complex super-set. The
concepts of configuration management can be difficult for
them to grasp, which makes it difficult to justify embedding
these practices as part of the development process.

CM: THE NEXT GENERATION - From Version Control to Product
Management
 by Joe Farah
------------------------------------------------------------

Version Control (VC) has been around long before software.
But it wasn't until the late 1960s and early 1970s that it
emerged as a common software function. Today, version
control is still necessary, but is a much smaller piece of
the Configuration Management (CM) and Product Management
(PM) pictures. While Version Control is a relatively simple
application, Configuration Management is anything but. No
wonder it is embraced with such reluctance. But this
doesn't have to be the case. The key to adopting a
successful CM program is to select tools which help you to
automate the complexity without taking short cuts that will
lead to problems down the road.
