If you are going to do a liquid layout, you can't mix pixels
and
percentages. You can do a nav of 20% and a content of 80%
which will
continue to work in various screen sizes.

Well ... I think I was doing that on purpose. I originally
had a float
solution similar to what you provided, but it failed when I
had wide content
that would not fit next to the navigation. In these
scenarios, the content
would drop below the navigation, as I understand it should
with a float.
But in my layout this is undesirable.
I wanted the content to remain next to the navigation and
just stretch the
display horizontally. By using the positioning and removing
the navigation
from the normal flow this was achieved, but if there is a
better way to do
this, I am all ears - or eyes as the case may be.
