In my opinion (and it is only my opinion), good programmers
are good programmers in whatever language they use. Most of
them can reel off about half a dozen languages in which they
can program fluently.
The common thread between them, in my experience, is that
they program all the time - at work, at home, even in their
dreams.
They also read lots of books and do all the exercises (if
there are any).
I'd advise you to read up on object-oriented programming
for a start, if you're not comfortable already with that.
Pick a book that uses any language you're interested in.
The principles are the same whatever the language.
After that, pick a book on the language of your choice from
a reputable publisher. O'Reilly are consistently good.
I've also found Wrox and Addison Wesley to be usually
pretty good. Apress are sometimes good.
I'd say that if you find it hard to see why programming
principles are pretty similar regardless of language, then
I'd say you might find it hard to become a good programmer.
