Hi

Yes, of course; but it is actually CVS or CVSNT that does the job for
you. Look up keyword substitution in the CVS documentation, or search
for "CVS keyword substitution" in any decent internet search engine.
That said, it is usually enough to include the text "$Id$" in a comment
or string at or near the top of each file - CVS will expand that text to
include the file name and version when you check out a copy from the
repository. There are a whole variety of different keywords to choose from.

As a particular point of interest, I usually fix things so that the
version information for every file/module is available to be
printed/queried from the final version of the program (i.e. in a
printable text string, not just a comment - I usually work in C++, C# or
Java, but the same can be true in SQL, HTML, etc) so that I know
absolutely what versions/revisions of every component/file/module were
used in any build or whatever. It has proved to be invaluable many times
in the past.

BTW: Get an updated version of WinCVS - 1.3.x is really old and there is
useful new stuff in the more recent versions. You may want to consider
updating to a newer version of CVS too.
