cvs checkout: warning: unrecognized response `'ssh'

is it only me or what? but it's been a nightmare trying to
use Wincvs
to checkout/tag/branch the past days... i could checkout
stuff okay if
ran cvs from dos command prompt, but trying to do it from
wincvs i get
numerous errors below. please help how to checkout / branch
from
wincvs? thanks.
