Checkout support for sub-modules w/ recent CVSNT

It appears that the CVSNT server (sometime post-2.0.51d)
won't
directly support the "check out into directory"
option on the checkout
settings dialog. The workaround involves creating the
specified dir
and using its parent as the cwd for the command. Would this
method
work for all versions of CVS? Could WinCVS do this for us to
make up
for the loss of funcionality in the server?
