Hello group,
Would someone kindly point out an article or put their
perspective as
to whether C# and .NET can be used without MS products? I
know MONO is
a BIG step in that direction but does it fall short at all?
Is it
possible to do this solely on an open source platform?

Thanks in advance,

-Al

I think for now mono is your best bet. You can check over at
tigris.org
periodically, they have a few promising projects there but
nothing in
production phase. C# is designed with the sole intent of
running on the
.net platform hence windows machines, so why would you want
to develop
on an open source platform? I would rather build in test in
the
environment i'm going to be delivering on.

I'd guess that he wants to develop for another platform
other than windows
using C# which is a perfectly valid reason for seeking out
projects like
mono. Check out mono and what novel is doing with it.
Windows might be the
most feature rich .net platform at this time but it's
certainly not the only
one worth considering. You can write portable programs using
mono, even
portable gui applications using a library like gtk# if
that's your intent.
