| Alcatel Speedtouch Pro (ADSL Router) |

Has anyone out there set up one of these? I know they are
really old
but should still work alright.
Apparently I can now get ADSL (not that Telecom actually
*told* me or
anything) so I have signed up but am having difficulty
connecting.
i found an old (2001!) article
(http://www.w
lug.org.nz/AlcatelSpeedTouch) on setting these up under
linux but am still having difficulty.
when I use the command:
pptp ip.address.of.your.adsl.modem user yourADSLusername
persist
i get a message like "device is required to
authenticate but no secret is found"
(I set the password in /etc/ppp/pap-secrets as described).

I do have one some where...
you'd need to operate in half bridge mode I think... thou
not sure if
the router does that.
Though, I'm confused, what are you trying to do exactly?
You want the
live IP on your machine?
Cheers Don

Yes, i got this out of the box at the bottom of the cupboard
with all
those odd bits and pieces! It was probably $500 when I
originally
bought it.

I don't know what you mean by half-bridge mode?

I think I understand the question (!) yes, I want it to act
as an ADSL
modem and have the live IP available to the firewall
(PFSense, I'm
hoping).

I ran one of these like that until, oh, September last
year.
I used ipcop and set the pptp setup from that. I don't
remember all the
details, it just went like that for years.
Just thinking as I type, I think the Home is the device that
I had, and
the one you have needed some tweaking for it to work like
the Home, or
something like that. I'll see if I can find some notes
somewhere.

That's called bridging. Works very well.
If only I could get my cable modem to operate that way -
have you tried,
Volker?

Bridging is about the one option on the modem that I haven't
tried.
It has four options:
PPP and IP routing
PPPoA to PPTP
IEEE 802.1D Transperant Bridging
classical IP and IP routing

Hmm, I've been trying to get it going by connecting it to
the laptop,
perhaps I should just connect it up to an IPCop box straight
away!
Will try that, I've got one preconfigured sitting around
somewhere.

There's a hack to make the "home" perform like a
"pro" (hope that
phrase doesn't upset your spam filter). I haven't seen
anything the
other way around.

I am pretty sure its the PPPoA to PPTP bridge you want, not
the one below..
You do need to set up an account through the Speedtouch web
gui first -
have you done that? Its on something like 10.0.0.138 by
default. Your
pfsense box needs to be on a 10.0.0.x address to access it.

It's all lost in the mists of time to me!

Cool, the latest attempt was using PPPoA to PPTP and I'd got
as far as
setting up the modem and was trying to get the laptop to
talk to it.
I'll connect up a firewall box tonight and see how I go.
Thanks!
Kerry.
