1) DULANEY ON CERTS
By Emmett Dulaney
Welcome to the new weekly CertCities.com column from Emmett
Dulaney
covering everything and anything certification-related!
GET READY FOR PDI+
CompTIA, the organization most widely known for its A+
certification
(over 600,000 certified worldwide), recently announced a new
certification that will soon be available.
PDI+ -- an acronym for "printing and document
imaging" -- is intended
for those who want a recognized and respected third party to
be able
to authenticate their entry-level skills in maintaining and
repairing printers, copiers, scanners, fax machines and
"multi-function peripherals."
Information specific to the PDI+ certifications can be found
at:
htt
p://certification.comptia.org/pdi/default.aspx
Go here to access the objectives:

.aspx.
THE CHANGING FACE OF IT CERTIFICATION
It wasn't that long ago when looking at an ad for an IT
certification
study product (test engine, boot camp, etc.) meant that you
were
looking at images of some of the most unattractive -- or
even homely --
individuals in the ad business.
Transcender, one of the pioneers in self-study test engines,
had a
character named Spike who became so popular that soon his
friends -- most of them Goths, nerds and other characters
you'd never
want to meet in a dark alley -- started appearing in the
ads, as well.
A plethora of other vendors jumped on the bandwagon and came
up with
similarly interesting-looking spokesmodels. As far as I can
tell,
the idea was that if these people could become certified,
there's
no reason why you couldn't.
Look at the ads now, though, and you'll see that the market
has
undergone a 180-degree change. Instead of seeing images of
people
you know you're better than, you now see images of people
you want
to be (or be with).
Transcender now has a "club" with images of hip
people dancing, jumping
and otherwise celebrating:

a>
And Training Camp makes you a superhero:
http://www.trainingc
amp.com/usa/
Even Microsoft has images of the happy people that I dream
of
working with:

a>
It's gotten a whole lot tougher to be a photogenic nerd.
BOOK OF THE WEEK: 'CCNP ONT OFFICIAL EXAM CERTIFICATION
GUIDE'
CCNP certification continues to hold its value in the
marketplace,
and Cisco Press continues to put out high-quality study
guides for
the exams.
One of the newest entries in the line is Amir Ranjbar's
"CCNP ONT
Official Exam Certification Guide." Targeted at exam
642-845, this
book walks through the objectives in an understandable
manner and
condenses what you need to know into a manageable package.

2) THIS WEEK'S IT CERTIFICATION NEWS
NEWS: "Microsoft Picks Prometric for Exam Delivery into
2008"
For years, Microsoft has offered certification and Dynamics
exams
through two official exam providers, Pearson Vue and Thomson
Prometric. That's about to change next year, as Microsoft
pares the
offering to just one company in 2008: Prometric.

NEWS: "MySQL Offers Free Training and Exams to Oracle
DBAs"
If you're certified on Oracle but want to add a MySQL title
to your
resume, now may be the opportune time. MySQL AB is making an
out-and-out play for Oracle Certified DBAs, announcing this
week that
it will offer Oracle DBAs free MySQL training plus a
complimentary
pass for one of its certification exams.

ditorialsID=1237
NEWS: "Citrix Announces Upcoming CCA Tracks for
NetScaler,
Access Gateway"
Citrix Systems announced recently that it has launched two
new Citrix
Certified Administrator (CCA) certification tracks: one for
the
company's NetScaler 8 platform, and the other covering its
Citrix
Access Gateway 8 Enterprise.

3) ZUBAIR'S TIP O' THE WEEK: CONNECTING TO WINDOWS SERVER
2003 REMOTELY
QUESTION:
Why can't some members of our IT staff connect to our
Windows Server
2003 domain controller remotely? They get the error message,
"The local
policy of this system does not permit you to log on
interactively."
Their account has already been added to the Remote Desktop
Users group.
ANSWER:
Microsoft's documentation on this topic is not always very
clear. You
have probably read the documentation that states that in
WS03, users
only need to be added to the Remote Desktop Users group;
unlike Windows
2000, they do not need the log on locally rights to connect
using
Remote Desktop Connection.
However, if the remote computer is a domain controller, then
the users
must also be given the user right, "Allow log on
through Terminal
Services." Give your IT staff this user right, run
"gpupdate/force"
and they should be able to connect remotely.

*NAT/Port Translation Issue* (CCNA/CCNP Forum)
husdonmbg writes:
"There is production server that is currently in
development here at
HO. The guys here are working in collaboration with another
company.
Now this other company needs to access this machine on the
inside
LAN (IP address 192.168.0.240) through FTP and http. Now, I
had
wanted to achieve this by adding this command on the
firewall:
ip nat inside source static tcp 192.168.0.244 21
196.31.219.97 21.
ip nat inside source static tcp 192.168.0.244 80
196.31.219.97 80.
Now the problem I have is that there is an FTP and HTTP
server running
already on the LAN. This two services (http and FTP) are
already
being re-directed to this server. I need this production
server to
have both services running and must be accessible from the
Internet.
I don't know how I am going to achieve this. Do you guys
have any idea
how I can do this?"

"I have a requirement to set up a network so that an
internal server
communicates with outside world through different WAN
networks. I
have three separate WAN connections terminated on a single

The internal network also connects to the same
switch..."

wfulton21 writes:
"I want to implement VLANs. Could someone advise me on
my decision?
There are approx. 400 computers on a single subnet, there
are at least
20 switches (some managed, some unmanaged). Am I correct in
thinking
implementing VLANs would improve network performance?"

*Cisco Switch* (Cisco -- Other Forum)
hoggard86 writes:
"As I have just started out in Cisco, I'm looking at
copying
configuration from one switch to another. Could someone tell
me how
this is done? I have tired doing it by using the show
running-config
command, copy all this into Notepad. Remember to edit the
text file
(IP, name, etc) and delete any control characters (squares).
Then
copy and 'paste to host' on the new switch. When doing this,
it brings
up a load of errors on switch. Can someone help?"
