1) WHAT'S NEW ON CERTCITIES.COM

INSIDE THE KERNEL: "Setting the Stage with Stream
Editing"
By Emmett Dulaney

Two of my favorite tools in the Unix/Linux toolbox are sed
and awk.
While sed is the "stream editor" and awk is a
quick programming
language, the truth of the matter is that they complement
each other
so well that I rarely use one without the other.

I recently had the occasion to work with two examples that
were
similar enough to require one or both of these tools, but
were
unrelated in scope. Both examples, however, show the beauty
and power
of what these tools can do.

2) DULANEY ON CERTS
By Emmett Dulaney

IS THERE A PROCTOR IN THE HOUSE?
Last week, I suggested that when it comes to
introductory-level
certifications, there's no reason why the exams can't be
open-resource
and more like a real-world environment, where you can grab a
reference
text off a shelf, bring up a knowledge base, check a forum
and so on.
http://certcities.com/editorial/columns/story.
asp?EditorialsID=234

Taking that idea further, the question now becomes whether
you REALLY
need to take entry-level exams at Prometric and VUE testing
centers
at all. Living in a global and connected world, isn't it
possible
for a candidate to take an exam from their home or office
just as
easily as from a testing center where the equipment is
likely too
old to still be of value?

Of course, this shortchanges the real (and possibly only)
value of
the testing centers: checking your photo ID to make sure
it's really
you taking the exam, and not a genius-for-hire. I'm saddened
by
testing centers that make you drive to a foreign environment
during
hours that are convenient only for them, just so a
receptionist -- who
wouldn't know what a driver's license two states away really
looks
like -- can write your name and information in a log book.
When it
comes to online authentication, there must be a way to do it
remotely.

We authenticate users for online banking, file access,
e-commerce
and a plethora of other situations. Sure, some fraud occurs
with
those implementations, but anyone who's ever met a
paper-MCSE can
tell you that there's a level of fraud inherent in the
system we
have now, as well. I'm willing to tolerate the possibility
of some
deception in the interest of the greater good.

Also, keep in mind that with introductory- or entry-level
exams, the
questions are typically knowledge-level only and aren't
meant to
certify someone as an expert in the field (for those, I
still endorse
hands-on testing in lab environments).

EXCHANGE SERVER 2007 EXAM NOW AVAILABLE IN SEVERAL LANGUAGES

In July, Microsoft exam 70-238 (PRO: Deploying Messaging
Solutions
with Microsoft Exchange Server 2007) went live. The
preparation
guide was updated in the end of August, and the exam is now
also
available in French, German and Spanish.

Focusing on planning (Planning Microsoft Exchange Server
2007
Upgrades and Migration, Planning for High Availability
Implementation,
Planning the Exchange Topology Deployment, Planning
Messaging Security
and Compliance Integration, and Planning for Messaging
Environment
Maintenance), this exam is required for the Microsoft
Certified IT
Professional: Enterprise Messaging Administrator
certification.

BOOK OF THE WEEK: 'RAISING CAPITAL: GET THE MONEY YOU NEED
TO GROW
YOUR BUSINESS'
Saying that funding is everybody's business is both a cliché
and an
understatement. Funding affects everything and businesses
must have
it in order to grow and survive. In "Raising Capital:
Get the Money
You Need To Grow Your Business" (http://tinyurl.com/2fw8nh), Andrew
J. Sherman provides a guide that's relevant to every
entrepreneur
and growing company. The 14 chapters are divided into four
parts:
Getting Ready To Raise Capital, Early-Stage Financing,
Growth
Financing and Alternatives to Traditional Financing

Reading this book, you'll get all the information you would
from a
senior-level college course on funding -- and save a fortune
on
tuition, in the meantime.

3) ZUBAIR'S TIP O' THE WEEK: SCOPY FUNCTIONALITY IN WINDOWS
SERVER 2003

QUESTION:
Where can I find SCOPY in Windows 2003?

ANSWER:
SCOPY used to be available in Windows NT 4.0 Resource Kit
but is no
longer available in Windows 2000/XP/2003. Among other
things, SCOPY
allowed you to copy the Access Control List (ACL) and audit
settings.

Microsoft has included some of the same functionality that
existed in
SCOPY in the XCOPY command. Here are some of the switches
that you can
use with XCOPY in Windows 2000/XP/2003:

 - XCOPY /F -- Displays full source and destination file
names
   while copying.
 - XCOPY /G -- Allows the copying of encrypted files to
destination
   that does not support encryption.
 - XCOPY /H -- Copies hidden and system files also.
 - XCOPY /O -- Copies file ownership and ACL information.
 - XCOPY /X -- Copies the file audit settings (implies /O).

Type XCOPY /? at the command prompt for a complete list of
options.

*Cisco 3750 Switch* (Cisco -- Other Forum)

hoggard86 writes:
"I have configured a 3750 switch. When uplinking I
can't get on the
network. I can ping the IP address on the switch that I have

configured but that's it. Uplink lights are green and seem
OK. We have
tried diffrent modules and cables but still no luck. I have
also used
a crossover cable to try uplinking as this has worked OK, so
I'm
guessing it's definitely an uplinking issue. Can someone
point me in
the right direction? Any troubleshooting steps I can take or
any
commands that I could be missing?"

*Configuring SIP/MGCP Over an E1 Trunk* (Cisco -- Real World
Forum)

hudsonmbg writes:
"I have two 3845 Cisco routers connected via a
microwave E1 link. One
of the routers is located in the admin building and the
other in some
residence. There is also a fibre optics connection to
another main
building. I would like to use either SIP or MGCP as the
control
protocol. When setting up the voice network dial-peer, I
have to
configure the session-target ipv4:..... What IP address
should I use?
The CallManager IP address or the next hop router IP
address?"

*VUE vs. Prometric* (MCSA/MCSE Forum)

bdewong writes:
"I was just wondering how the distribution of VUE and
Prometric
testing centers were in your area. In Hawaii, VUE was my
center of
choice because there are five within two miles of my
workplace.
Prometric, on the other hand, only has three centers on the
whole
island, in inconvenient locations."
