1) DULANEY ON CERTS
By Emmett Dulaney

MICROSOFT KEEPS 'SECOND SHOT' GOING
Originally intended to expire at the end of January,
Microsoft's
Second Shot offer has been extended until June 30.
http://certcities.com/editorial/news/story.asp?E
ditorialsID=1308

The Second Shot promotion gives two chances to pass each
certification
exam, instead of just the one, as long as you register
before taking
the first exam. According to the FAQ, "To take
advantage of this
offer, you must register and pay for the exam by using a
Second Shot
exam voucher. To take advantage of this Second Shot offer,
you must
register, pay for, and take your exam by May 31, 2008. (The
Second
Shot offer is valid through June 30, 2008.)"

More information on this offer can be found here:
http://www.microsoft.com/learning/mcp/offers
/secondshot/default.mspx

REGISTER TO BE NOTIFIED OF WINDOWS SERVER 2008 EXAMS
If you register with Microsoft under its "First to
Know" program,
you'll be automatically notified when changes to the status
of the
Windows Server 2008 exams occur -- and, possibly, save some
money.

According to Microsoft's Web site:

"Upon availability of the Windows Server 2008
Microsoft Certified
Technology Specialist (MCTS) exams (estimated availability
in March
2008), you will receive an e-mail notification that
contains your 40
percent savings code, which you can use on your choice of
one of the
 first three exams (70-640, 70-642, or 70-643)."

The offer continues:

"Upon availability of the Windows Server 2008
Microsoft Certified IT
Professional (MCITP) exams (estimated availability in April
2008),
you will receive an e-mail notification that contains your
second
40 percent savings code, which you can use on your choice
of one of
the final two exams (70-646 or 70-647)."

More information on the notification program can be found

BOOK OF THE WEEK: 'SECURITY ADMINISTRATOR STREET SMARTS'
One of the most difficult things to do is to take the
objectives for
an exam that's almost wholly knowledge-based (read:
memorization)
and make it apply to the real world. "Security
Administrator Street
Smarts: A Real World Gide to CompTIA Security+ Skills"

(http://tinyurl.com/2d5uaf) treads that path well.

The authors, David R. Miller and Michael Gregg, have
essentially
divided the five domains of the certification exam into 10
"phases"
(think chapters). Beneath each phase are a number of tasks
that
address the objectives.

Beneath each task, there's a:

 - Scenario: An overview of what you need to do.
 - Scope of task: Stating that it should take 60 minutes,
outlining
   the setup and caveats.
 - Procedure: Step-by-step walkthrough of the task.
 - Criteria for completion: What should exist when you
finish.

To get a better feel for the way the material is presented,
visit the
sample chapter here:
http://media.wiley.com/product_data/excerp
t/86/04701025/0470102586.pdf

Once you do, you'll find this is a good way to not only
memorize
material to pass an exam, but to understand it fully, as
well.

2) ZUBAIR'S TIP O' THE WEEK: THE MYSTERY OF THE 'DELEGATION
OF
CONTROL' WIZARD

QUESTION:
I delegated control to an individual in our IT department
using the
Delegation of Control Wizard, but somehow the permissions
got revoked.
Why would the rights get revoked automatically?

ANSWER:
Delegation can come in handy when you want to assign
specific rights
to non-administrators so they can perform certain tasks in
Active Directory.

If you've assigned an individual certain rights only to find
later
that the permissions have been revoked, it's most likely
because that
individual is a member of one of the protected built-in
groups (such
as Backup Operators, Server Operators, Domain Admins, etc.).

When you use the Delegation of Control Wizard to assign
permissions
to an account, the permissions are enforced once an hour by
a special
thread on the server that holds the PDC Emulator role in
your domain.
When you assign permissions to an individual who happens to
be a
member of one of the built-in protected groups and there's a
conflict
with the implicit permissions assigned to any member of the
protected
group, the delegated rights for the individual can get
revoked within
an hour.

There are two simple workarounds to this problem. The first
is to
make sure that there are no group membership conflicts. The
second is
to ensure that the individual in your IT department who's
being
delegated the rights isn't a member of one of the built-in
protected groups.

You can create your own groups and then add him/her to the
group. For
example, if the user needs to be a member of the Backup
Operators
group, you can create your own IT Backup Operators group
instead of
using the built-in group. You can then make the user member
of
this group.

*Move Win2K3/AD Server* (Microsoft -- Real World Forum)

"There was a great post someone left on moving a
Windows 2003/AD server
to a different subnet/site and I can't find it anywhere. It
had very
detailed steps on everything, including what you would do
manually to
ensure the old SRV records were removed and the new SRV
records were
created, checking the ISTG and lots of other things I can't
remember.
Anyone else have a link to this post or know of an equally
detailed

*Cisco IOS Licensing Question* (CCNA/CCNP Forum)

Nonapeptide writes:
"The time has come for me to dive into the Cisco
certification
process. A few months back, when I wasn't sure if I was
going to do
any Cisco training, I casually looked into purchasing some
Cisco
equipment to create a small CCNA/CCDA lab. I found an
article that
gave some tips for purchasing used Cisco equipment. If my
memory
serves me correctly, there was something in the article that
mentioned
that if you bought used equipment, you had to re-license the
IOS or
something before it could legally be considered yours. This

re-licensing was purported to be a relatively significant
sum of money
(relative to the price of a few old 2500 series routers).

Alas, I didn't bookmark that link (not thinking that I'd be
doing
Cisco stuff for a while) and now can't find that same
article again.
I've searched quite a few places and can't find anything
that even
remotely resembles that information. Maybe I just read a
bogus article
that one time? Would someone set me straight on this,
please?"

*How To Restore Library from AS400* (IBM/Lotus Forum)

jsbustamante writes:
"Can someone help me to restore library from AS400
backup tape? We
usually do a daily backup on a tape. I need a step-by-step
procedure
on how to retrieve a library. Another question: When I do
restore
backup, does it usually take time to finish restoring the
library from
the backup tape?"
