1) DULANEY ON CERTS
By Emmett Dulaney

COMPTIA CERTS GET ANSI NOD
Three certifications from CompTIA were recently accredited
by the
American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as being in
compliance
with "requirements outlined in internationally accepted
standards
for assessing personnel certification programs (ANSI/ISO/IEC
17024);
and for the operation of accreditation bodies (ISO/IEC
17011)."
http://www.comptia.org/pressroom/get_pr.aspx?prid=1332

The three certifications are Security+, Network+ and A+ --
the
three most popular exams that CompTIA offers on its
"plus" menu of
for-life certifications.

Also earning ANSI accreditation was InfoComm International
and its
set of audiovisual certifications.
http://www.infocomm.org/cps/rde/xchg/infoc
omm/hs.xsl/certification.htm

The base certification from InfoComm is that of Certified
Technology
Specialist; from there, you can branch to specializing in
either
installation or design.

BOOK OF THE WEEK: 'CCNA OFFICIAL EXAM CERTIFICATION
LIBRARY'
The third edition of "CCNA Official Exam Certification
Library"
(http://tinyurl.com/6qrrfb) is now out and better than ever.

The "library" is a boxed set of two books, both
written by Wendell
Odom, that sells for 25 percent less than buying both books

individually. The first book, "CCENT/CCNA ICND1
Official Exam
Certification Guide" (second edition), focuses on exam
640-822. The
second book, "CCNA ICND2 Official Exam Certification
Guide" (second
edition), is written for exam 640-816.

While both books are well-written and contain the usual exam
guide
elements, their real strength lies in the media that
accompany them.
With each book is a DVD containing about 60 minutes of video

training, in addition to a CD of test questions and PDFs of
the book.

The video training increases in value when you realize that
Odom
teaches QoS, MPLS and CCNA courses for a living and has been
doing
so for quite a while. Watching the video is one of the best
ways to
fully grasp subnetting and its intricacies.

MORE BOOKS FOR THE WEEK
If you don't need a full "library" or even a
custom/deluxe/jumbo-edition study guide to help you study
for an
exam, check out the "Portable Command Guide"
series.

Cisco Press started issuing these a while back, and two more
have
just recently been published: "CCNP ISCW Portable
Command Guide"
(http://tinyurl.com/3o6nea) has the nuts and bolts of what you
should know for exam 642-825, while "CCNP ONT Portable
Command
Guide" (http://tinyurl.com/3vnnu2) has similar information for
exam 642-845.

2) ZUBAIR'S TIP O' THE WEEK: EXPORTING PRINTER SETTINGS IN
VISTA

QUESTION:
How do I export printers and settings from one Windows Vista
computer
to another?

ANSWER:
In Windows Vista, you can use either the Print Management
console or
the command-line tool printbrm.exe to export your printer
settings
to other Windows Vista computers.

The Print Management console is available in Control Panel,
System
and Maintenance, Administrative Tools. Right-click Print
Management
and select Migrate Printers. You'll see the options to
export and
import printer queues and printer drivers to or from a file.
When
you specify a file where the printer settings should be
exported, the
system will add the .printerExport extension to the name. If
the
export is successful, you'll see a message indicating the
operation
completed with no errors. You'll also see several entries in
the
Event Viewer detailing the process.

The second method to export and import printer settings is
to use the
command-line tool printbrm.exe. This tool is located in
%systemroot%System32SpoolTools folder. Type printbrm.exe
/? for the
syntax. The Tools folder isn't on the path so you'll need to
either
add it to the path or run the command from the Tools
folder.

*Audio Over the 'Net* (CCNA/CCNP Forum)

orilivni writes:
"While we make a LIVE-AUDIO conversation on the
Internet (with popular
programs like Messenger, Skype, ICQ, etc.), there is a delay
between
human A to B. My question is: Is there any option to
minimize this
delay as close to zero? Does someone know some system that
can do it?
(Some kind of audio conference through the 'Net.) Again, I'm
talking
only about audio, not video or a written chat."

*Full Screen for DOS App in Remote Desktop* (Microsoft --
Real
World Forum)

Corsair writes:
"I have this old MS-DOS program that when I run it
locally on my 2003
server I can change the screen size to full screen
(Alt+Enter). When I
do a remote connection to the server and run the program, if
I do
Alt+Enter I get this error: 'The video device failed to
initialize for
full screen mode.'

What can I do to be able to run this program in full mode
when using
it through a remote connection?"

*Problem of IP Routing* (CCNA/CCNP Forum)

mustafiz07 writes:
"I'm having a routing problem with Cisco 3560 switch.
Let me describe
the problem: I have two network 192.168.1.0/24 and
10.143.150.128/26
network which are connected to fa 0/1 and fa 0/2 port
respectively. IP
assigned to port fa 0/1 is 192.168.1.1 and fa 0/2 port gets
IP from
DHCP server say it is 10.143.150.138 where the gateway of
DHCP server
is 10.143.150.129.

Now the problem is I can ping to 10.143.150.138 (port IP)
from a PC of
IP 192.168.1.2 but I can't ping 10.143.150.129 (gateway)
from that PC.
I've tried with IP route command in switch like: IP route
0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.143.150.129. But it doesn't
work..."
