hello,

edge is a small office product with very limited hardware
ressources and is not full fw1 featured. Good for up to
about 2Mbit and 10 users.

utm1 appliance is full fw1 featured and much faster than the
edge. More smartdefense, more interfaces, more
authentication and bandwidth-mgmt or anti-virus.

But the UTM Edge appliance can also be configured for no
user limit,
correct?

My great hesitation is that there is a big price
difference:

* UTM-1: $7500 for the UTM-1 450
   + $1200/year for SmartDefense subscription

* UTM Edge: $2000 for the unlimited/wired version
   + $$600/year for SmartDefense subscription

That's based on the Checkpoint price list.

So obviously, the UTM-1 is a whole lot more expensive. What
do I get for
that extre $5500 purchase price???

If you have a stand-alone Windows and want something more
"proprietary", you
can just migrate from Windows to Secure Platform, which
comes included with
every Check Point license at no extra charge and even when
it is installed
over an open hardware platform, makes your open server an
"appliance"
because it is proprietary, comes completely hardened and
especially
customized to be your firewall's platform.

I you currently have no hardware resources problem, you can
even format your
current Windows machine with the Secure Platform disk and
not even have to
invest on hardware.

In regards of your doubts, definitely you would not want to
move from a full
VPN-1 firewall to an Edge or SafeOffice appliance, for all
the reasons
other guys have explained. Since UTM-1 seems the best of the
choices you
described, be aware of the fact that a UTM-1 is basically an
 open server
with a Check Point sticker on the outside and running a
modified version of
Secure Platform, which you can basically have for free right
now.

Wrapping it up, my suggestion would be use upgrade_export to
get a config
backup, reinstall the same box with Secure Platform (which
is a lot better
platform for your firewall) and run upgrade_import on it. It
will not cost
you a dime.

Regards

Well, I wouldn't migrate on my current hardware. Let's just
say that my
existing hardware is very dated. So no matter what, I need
to invest in
new hardware.
