Hi Guys,
I had a working version of VPN-1 r65 on a RedHat 3 box. I
installed SecurePlatform on this box and now I can no longer
ping my default router (or even any other machine on the
same subnet). If I check ifconfig, I see that there are TX
packets, but no RX packets! I chose the interface eth0 as
the management interface and this is the only interface I
brought up at the moment. This firewall is meant to be a
part of a cluster - I can no longer reach the machine from
the Checkpoint Management Server either to establish SIC or
anything else. I even tried cpstop on this SecurePlatform
machine to see if ping would work afterwards, but I have the
same problrem.
I am quite sure that this is some simple misconfiguration on
my part - does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!

did you try an "fw unloadlocal" ?
there is a default policy that drops the traffic.
could you also try from the firewall in expert mode :
fw log
to see if the logs from the firewall shows anything ?
I'm not sure the ip forwarding is still active when you run
a cpstop.
try fw unloadlocal, then SIC, then push a basic policy and
watch the logs.

Hi!
Ok, I unloaded the default policy, but it did not help my
connectivity issues. I also checked the logs with fw log -
but there is nothing in the log about dropping ping traffic
or refusing SIC from the management server.
Are there any other things I could try? When cpconfig ran, I
chose to enable clustering, and install VPN-1 Power, and my
management interface is the interface that I am trying to
reach from the management server.
Thanks

Hi,
do you have any traffic on your interfaces ? (tcpdump).
do you have any errors on the ports ? (netstat -ia).
do you have any arp entries on your smartcenter for the
gateway you try
to reach ? (arp -a)
otherwise, check your iso and reinstall the box.

| Details of my NIC problems with
SecureRemote R65... |
  Slovenia |
2007-10-19 08:16:05 |
Hi Guys,
Here then are the details of my problems with SecurePlatform
R65.
Hardware, I have two HP dl380g5 boxes - these boxes each
have 2 Gigabit Intel interfaces built-in. In addition to
this there is one Quad HP nc364t interfaces installed in
each box. These boxes are planned to function as a Cluster.
Running the HCL CD on these boxes shows that SecurePlatform
finds drivers for all NIC's with no problems.
If I install another Linux operating system on these boxes -
I have complete connectivity, so I can rule out any
networking problems or IP| configuration errors.
When the boxes have SecureRemote installed, I have tried the
following:
* Before running cpconfig, I cannot ping the attached switch
or router.
* Running tcpdump on the boxes shows absolutely no traffic,
even when I try to ping the box from another host or after
running cpconfig and trying SIC from the Management Server
* I have tried to manually set ethtool to speed 1000 duplex
full autoneg no (I've seen SecureRemote having problems
making these settings 'stick'!)
* ifconfig shows the correct amount of TX packets, but no RX
packets and no Lost packets and no Error packets.
* fw unloadlocal does not help me - obviously after
sysconfig and cpconfig
* fw log shows no errors
* /var/log/messages shows no errors
Has anybody seen something similar before, or perhaps I can
post some more information if you suspect what I should look
for?
Thanks Guys!
Chris

Is this quad card 100 Mb/s or 1 Gb/s ethernet?

By definition Gb/s ethernet MUST be autonegotiated! It is
classified
mandatory in the specs.

Start with the obvious. Didn't you mix up the interfaces?
The order of
the interfaces may not at all be what you might expect from
the labels.
It sounds silly but it happens way too much to ignore it. If
you are
250% sure you got it right and had at least one other person
check this
independently the next information will be usefull.
* ifconfig -a
* netstat -ni
* netstat -nr
* lsmod
* uname -a
And just for fun. Remove that quad card and try again.
Hugo.

try to get a managed switch and see if any packets leave
from the NIC
when you ping other hosts on the network.

Well Chris, you say that ran the HCL CD and it found drivers
for all NICs,
but checking the HCL link bellow:
http://www.checkpoint.com/services/techsupport/
hcl/nic/index.html
I don't see the NC364T listed at all.
Actually I'm planning a new deployment for one of my
customers and being
able to use for HP DL380G5 with the NC364T NICs was the only
way we could
achieve the amount of NICs my customer wants on his firewall
modules, since
I did not find those on the link above, I contacted Check
Point pre-sales
and they told me the NC364T was going to be supported on a
new SPLAT release
that will come out early next year, before that there was NO
support for
those NICs on SPLAT at all.
So most likely what you have a is a compatibility issue.
Regards

Hi Guys,
Thanks to everyone who offered ideas. In the end, I tried
taking the Quad card out of the box and SecurePlatform could
not actually start the networking anymore. But with a quick
re-install of SecurePlatform, everything worked fine (with
just the 2 onboard NIC's installed).
So, now it seems we need to buy new Quad NIC's
Yeah, as I mentioned when I ran the HCL CD image that you
can download, the machine passed and it found all six
interfaces and drivers for them (2 onboard and 4 on the
Quad) - and I got the message, this machine is cool to
install SecurePlatform on etc... The thing that confused me
most was obviously that neither the Quad or onboard
interfaces worked at all - I would have expected the 2
onboard nic's to work - so if anyone could humor me with an
idea as to why even the 2 onboard nic's didn't work, well
that would be interesting
But, as I mentioned, I took the Quad out and had to
reinstall SecurePlatform, but now it works great!
Thanks
Chris

could not actually start the networking anymore. But with a
quick re-install of SecurePlatform, everything worked fine
(with just the 2 onboard NIC's installed).

> Yeah, as I mentioned when I ran the HCL CD image that
you can download, the machine passed and it found all six
interfaces and drivers for them (2 onboard and 4 on the
Quad) - and I got the message, this machine is cool to
install SecurePlatform on etc... The thing that confused me
most was obviously that neither the Quad or onboard
interfaces worked at all - I would have expected the 2
onboard nic's to work - so if anyone could humor me with an
idea as to why even the 2 onboard nic's didn't work, well
that would be interesting
If they happen to share the same driver then 1 bad interface
may corrupt
all interfaces. It may actually a defective card. Those
things happen to
die every sometimes. And Murphy makes sure it always happens
at the most
ackward moments.
Not having seen any lsmod output and such it is hard to
tell.
