php5: location of php.ini file?

I'm running cherokee and php5 but I can't seem to figure out
how
cherokee loads the default settings for php5 (php.ini).  I
tried
putting the php.ini file in:
  /etc/php/cgi/php.ini
  /etc/php5/cgi/php.ini

but still cherokee does not seem to use the settings in the
php.ini file.
How do you get cherokee to read the php.ini file and set the
php
environment variables inside of it?
