discern the current stage in filter API ?

Is this possible?  I can't find it in the docs.

I have a bit of code right now that is overriding a function
written
for TurboGears - I need to make it behave differently based
on the
request phase

i could write a user filter that just logs what phase I'm
currently on
to cherrypy.request -- but i figured that somewhere that
informtation
has to be already available, and I'm just not finding it in
the book
docs or wiki.
