postgresql session database timeout

i'm using postgres to store session info

i've run into this problem - my db connection goes bad /
expires after
periods of inactivity

the first hit calls an exception, the second seems to be ok

is there a built in option to ping the db ( couldn't find
it anywhere
online )?  a lot of other frameworks do this.
