It is a good practice to incorporate an OR mapping framework to access the data sources. The framework will ensure the clear separation of Data Source specific access from your business domain and business logic. Which framework you pick is based on your needs. Hibernate is definitely one of the most commonly used. Hibernate is very good for integrating Java applications into legacy/existing relational databases and where you need a lot of support for RDBMS. But may too complicated to use for applications that need access to a database for archival purposes and where the DB is new and created for the purpose of your application only. So simpler frameworks may apply such as IBatis. JPOX, I will definitely recommend if you plan to use other data sources other than relational or JGrinderX which has a very simple API and can be used with relational and Object oriented databases such as GemStone and Versant.

I do not have any experience with any OR mapping libraries, so I plan
on learning some. (My company is not exactly cutting edge.)

What is the status of OR mapping tool utilization in the Chicago
market? I assume Hibernate is used a lot. What about iBatis or JPOX?
Or can I just stick with Hibernate and leave it at that?
