You also have to consider the relative "cost" of a
SPAN port.  While not 
taxing on the device doing the SPAN itself, many platforms
limit the 
number of spans that can be configured, and often times they
are hot 
commodities taken up by security groups for IDS/IPS boxes,
etc...
