8-bit WD IDE adapter + CF?

   The penny finally dropped.

   A few days ago someone mentioned that a CF-IDE adapter
worked with an 
8-bit controller.  I think.  Something about compact flash
and 8-bit anyway.

   Does that mean I can replace the dead IDE drive on a
WDAT-140 or 
-150controller with compact flash?

   The CF standard, if I recall correctly, requires that CF
cards  
implement the 8-bit transfer mode that many (most?) IDE hard
drives  
now lack.
