Need some guidance please

Recenly I was looking using prototype periodicupdate
function to have
an application that will automatically query the server and
get any new
records that are added in the database.
Specifically, I have an application in PHP that sends a
message. THe
message get's queued in the outbox then its state changes to
pending
and then its status turns into either succesful delevered or
failed.

So using prototype I query the server every second to see if
the status
of the message has changed.

Ofcourse that will create a huge server load if there are
many users
doing the same thing.

So I would like to ask you if there is an implemented
sollution for
something like that.
If you have an example would be the best, if not at least
point me in
the right direction.

I'm working on a hello world example, that works through
either Tomcat
or Jetty. I am having some teething problems, so I won't
post now.
There are some examples in the Jetty src such as a chat room
(uses just
CometDServlet to relay messages to all clients subscribed to
a certain
channel). There is one called Magnets, and also one which
shows how you
can subscribe to the server to any channel (I think the name
is
something like BayeuxStartupListener.java). All of this can
be found at

to
everything (however, it is using Tomcat) can be found at

Hope that is of some help, as I have been struggling a
