We don't use Verity at all. We have been happy with the
ThunderStone
search appliance. Their home page is

	http://www.thunderstone.com/texis/site/pages/Applianc
e.html

We currently have ours indexing 170,000 pages from about 84
different
servers, and explicitly including or excluding items in
various categories.

Their technical support has been excellent.

Out of the box it permits custom searches that return
results restricted to
any particular subsite or sub-subsite. We document that for
our CommonSpot
pagemasters, starting at

	http://www.ohiou.edu/pagemasters/commonspot
/pageadv/customsearch.html

It is possible to define "meta search" profiles
that combine the results
from multiple specific profiles.

Another advantage of the ThunderStone appliance is the
"Best Bets" feature;
it is currently limited by the fact that it is
labor-intensive to set up,
but it works nicely. To see it in action, go to

	http://www.ohio.edu/

and type "president" or "provost" in
the search box at the upper right.
You will notice that the results pages include a "Look
here first" block at
the top; the HTML that generates that is readily
customizable.
