When I got out of the Navy I had to go through a career
counseling class
and that was one of the things that was stressed. The
instructor said
that if the applicant mentions a number, there was a high
probability
that it would be too high or too low. Whereas, if the
interviewer
mentions a dollar figure the probability would be very high
that it
would exceed what the applicant expected. He did further
clarify that
this generally did not apply to low wage jobs, but rather to
jobs where
you would go through several interviews before being hired.
Another thing he mentioned was to not immediately accept
their first
offer, rather tell them you are evaluating several offers
and you would
give them your answer in a couple of days. Often they will
come back
with a higher offer after a day or two if they really want
you and they
think a competitor is trying to hire you, and if they don't
you can
still accept their original offer.
