So everything was going along fine and then last night no one could get
on the internet. I first noticed when I couldn't get emails to send.
Turns out the 16 port SMC switch had decided to take a permanent
holiday. After ganging up a couple 5 port Linksys, I had most all the
necessary systems back up but now had to replace the switch.
Newegg had a Netgear 24 port for $83 but it was out of stock and the
only other one was $100 plus $8 S&H. Being the cheap ba*8&^ son of a
gun that I am, I considered waiting but then found the same switch at
Staples for $89.95 (plus tax). After having to unplug things so I could
plug in the network printer, I decided to see if they had it in stock or
if I would have to order it and wait till Tuesday or Wednesday.
Lo and behold, they had gotten one in on Friday. I said, don't go away,
I'll be right there. When I went to check out, the price came up as
$79.95. Happy Father's Day to me!
BTW, whenever you have to replace something like a switch, if all the
ports on your existing switch are full, you need to go to the next size
up. Funny, now that I have everything connected back together, I only
have 7 ports left. I guess I did need to upgrade anyway.
