Help please beginner

Hi'

I bought my first computer, a used e-machine with vista, and would like
to access the hard drive contents to see what's there.

Can I do this from desktop controls or does it take special software or
equipment?

you can do it by click the start button and select computer. Then it will bring you up to the drives listed inside of your computer.
