Can anyone help me please?

My son and I built two computers with exactly the same components,
identical in all aspects, except the operating system. I installed
Vista 64 and he installed XP.

After a few days of Vista I hated it, as some of my old programmes
wouldn't run on it and I hated the new interface. My son said he
really wished he had it, so rather than try to install the OS's on
different computers, which would cause problems with Microsoft we
decided to just swap hard drives.

Now right from the start, his computer didn't recognise his hard
drive as a fixed drive, but a removable one and showed the "safe to
remove hardware" arrow in the bottom right corner. Mine was
recognised for what it was without any problems.

Bear with me, I'm getting there

Anyway, we are both happy with our respective operating systems, but
his hard drive is also recognised on my pc as a removable drive now
and that annoying little arrow is ever present.

So, what I need help with is, how do I make it recognise the HD as a
fixed drive and not a removable one and also, this pc thinks I am him
now and I can't swap our identities. How can I achieve this please?

I await your learned expertise and solutions ladies and gentlemen, as
I haven't got a clue how to rectify this. If this was fixed I would
be as happy as he is with Vista

Thanks in anticipation,

Frank

The identity issue can be solved by creating a new identity profile and
using it. Within the control panel there should be a User Accounts icon.
Use it to create a new account on both computers. Once you have tested
it to be working, delete the old account.

I'm curious. How did you switch operating systems? Can you give a few
details about the method used? Have you tried removing the disk driver
and letting widows install a new one.

Great, I'll give that a try, thanks

The method? Well as I said, we built identical machines with the exact same
components, one with XP installed and one with Vista 64. All we did was swap
hard drives, as all the installed drivers were the same for both machines
and they
both fired up nicely and carried on with no problems. To all intents and
purposes,
they were still in the machine they were installed on, so to speak.

No, I haven't. I will try it now though and report back how I get on. Once
again
thanks, as I was despairing of anyone offering me any solutions to either

This procedure suggests that Windows sees an autorun.inf in the root
directory. AutoRun is a feature of the Microsoft Windows operating
system. It automates the procedures for installing and configuring
products designed for Windows-based platforms that are distributed on
CD-ROMs. When users insert an AutoRun-enabled compact disc into their
CD-ROM drive, AutoRun automatically runs an application on the CD-ROM
that installs, configures, or runs the selected product.

Try this:

* Click *Start*, click *Run*, type X:, where X is the letter of the
physical hard disk drive that appears as a removable drive. Click
*OK*.
* Right-click the Autorun.inf file, and then click *Delete*. (I
suggest that you rename it).
* Restart your computer.

I tried that and it just took me to a window with the contents of C: on
it, amongst which was a txt doc with the following on it;-

[InstallShield Silent]
Version=v7.00
File=Log File
[ResponseResult]
ResultCode=0
[Application]
Name=SDK
Version=1.1.007
Company=Portrait Displays, Inc.
Lang=0009

I haven't got a clue what it means?
