IBM R40 Notebook suddenly lost audio

I am trying to work out what has gone wrong, any ideas would be welcome

Go into the Control Panel and click on Sounds and Audio Devices. The
first tab that comes up on top should list the audio device. If it is
says no audio device installed, go to System, Hardware, Device Manager
and see if there are any yellow marks by the devices indicating a
corrupted or missing driver.
