Thanks. That's the thing - I'm terrified to try things. You'd think
they'd have some official information as to what can be used but the
only official advice I found was the alcohol - the rest is "don't use
this" type admonitions. [It's a bit scary that important information
is encased in such fragile media and much can't be easily replaced (I
think you can't copy bought disks, so once they are damaged, they're
gone for good).] The Reader's Digest keeps sending me cds of things
they want me to buy, so I'll give it a go on one of those.
