Songbird is a media browser and Web player built from Firefox, VLC Player, and SQLite. Songbird is open source and supports user contributed, cross-platform extensions. The latest 0.2.5 update adds a host of new features to the application and Songbird Web site, including command-line handling, support for USB mass-storage devices, a filterable Web library, and a new tools menu. Note: Beta or prerelease software is not intended for inexperienced users, as the software may contain bugs or may potentially damage your system. We strongly recommend that users exercise caution and save all mission-critical data before installing or using this software. Free. No limitations. Requirements: Windows 2000/2003 Server/XP/Vista, 733MHz CPU, 128MB RAM, 40MB disk space.
Editor's review of Songbird: If Firefox and iTunes hooked up, their hatchling could very well be Songbird. Still in beta and plenty buggy, it's nevertheless a fun app that's a Web browser and a music player. The app scans Web sites for MP3s then lists them in a window at the bottom of the browser for easy listening. Links to major music sites and blogs are included, so finding the latest tunes is a cinch. Or, you can switch to the media player, which plays music from your hard drive. Building playlists from these disparate sources is as sweet as a hummingbird feeder. Songbird's no gray pigeon, either, with two skins and a bird theme bolstered by a clean layout that takes its structures, if not plumage, from iTunes. As a beta, not all of Songbird's features work well, if at all. It wouldn't recognize our iPod, and the browser had an annoying habit of jumping to the app's home page after switching from browser to the media player and back. Tabbed browsing isn't supported yet, and it's unclear whether Firefox extensions will be supported in future upgrades. Still, Songbird could really take flight for the music-loving, Web-surfing fanatic in all of us.
