A Lady brought her little Sony Laptop in because it is "getting slow",
so she wanted it checked for viruses etc. It has one of those finger
print log in devices, so before she left it I made sure she removed the
login password, which she used the finger print for so I can get into
the operating system without having to make my own account etc etc. In
the course of removing it, she was telling me a little bit about how her
husband was really suspicious of her, and she was trying to keep him out
of her business without making a big deal out of it, but somehow he was
still able to log on and read her email etc etc.

Well I just started cleaning it up and guess what??? There is a
keyolgger installed in the unit. I was just going to remove it and not
say anything, but now I am not sure what the proper thing to do is. In
my opinion, any husband who resorts to this should be strung up by his
balls, or at the very least get some serious consoling, but if I tell
the lady what is going on, I am sure it will trigger some
confrontation. She actually seemed pretty blase' about his paranoia,
but I know this type of insecurity can be dangerous.

Any discussion of this will be welcome.

Yes, as soon as I do so. Right now I am leaning towards the advice
here, that since she is my paying customer she has a right to know what
sort of Malware I found so she can take appropriate measures to protect
her information and at least check to see if any has been compromised.
I do not know, as a matter of FACT, who put the keylogger there, and it
is my obligation to inform her that one was installed.

Right now I am just waiting for her to call me to see if it is ready,
since I do not want to call and leave a message or even have my caller
ID come up in case the other "party" is getting paranoid and looking to
find out where the unit is so he can "do her a favor"; and come pick it
up or something. I know that if I were in his shoes and had installed a
keylogger on MY wife's laptop, and then I found out she had taken it to
a shop for repair, I would be more than a little concerned about the
fact that the cat was about to get out of the bag.

You are looking at this problem from a personal standpoint. While I
understand your point of view, this wouldn't really be an option in this
instance.

Ardell has a business and part of that business is to clean malware from
computers. He has no way to know for certain how the keylogger was
installed. It could have been from any number of sources, not necessarily
the husband.

I think Ardell is doing exactly the right thing. The customer needs to know
her computer was compromised. She may have online banking or any number of
financial assets on that computer and if she does, she needs to take steps
to avoid losing funds. She may even be at risk for having her identity
stolen.

my 2 cents..
I think you should tell her. She already knows the husband is spying on
her. and it's not your position to worry about what other people do.
There's no way to know how she will react or how she will confront the
husband. There's no way to know even if the husband did it, perhaps there's
the logger there for a child or roommate (I know I needed to install a key
logger on my machine because of roommates doing some some really stupid
things on my computer and Internet account) it's also possible that the
computer had/has been compromised and the logger installed that way.

Personally, knowing the above information, I would just tell her (in person)
what I found and removed. I assume the lady is old enough to fight her own
battles and smart enough to handle the situation with care.

since the "lady" brought the laptop to you, (my opinion) you owe her to tell
her. she told you to check for virus'. key loggers can be a virus. she told
you to fix it so, you fix it. lol. and, if i was that lady, i'd really give
the old boy something good to read in my email after i found the keylogger..
lol.

Ok. The owner of the unit just came by and picked it up. She was
rather flabbergasted when I told her a Keylogger had been installed in
the unit and explained what it does. I also instructed her on how to
set an administrator password so no-one can simply boot up in the safe
mode and create a new account for themselves with the power to remove
someone else's password.

Glad to be rid of this one.

Hi
I got my dvd/cd player burner and it is installed. It didn't come with any software and now I wonder what would be a good program to purchase to use it ... thanks ...

Smart man. When something like this comes up it's good to be able to
separate the aspects of your duty as a paid tech and whatever other
opinions you may have and to protect your interests on both counts.
I think you are making the right call.
