Hi,
You cannot Change the MBR as MBR is located in the BOOT sector i.e.
the sector 0 of the track 0...You can rewrite MBR by logging into
Recovery Console and run a fixmbr OR fix boot command...

Well that's changing it then surely!

You forgot to mention how to get into recovery console too

It's usually accessed via the XP CD, by booting from it
Wait till you see this......

# To setup Windows XP now, press Enter.
# To Repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.
# To quit setup without installing XP, press F3.

An alternative method is to use to a Windows 98/ME boot floppy
and boot from that instead - assuming you have a floppy that is.

You can get a boot floppy from here, if you don't have one
www.bootdisk.com

Let it boot, then type

fdisk/mbr

... and press return

Remove the floppy and press CTRL-ALT-DEL to reboot

There's no space in the fixboot command btw
