I have narrowed down my problem that I originaly labeled "cannot
control cursor". Both eplorer.exe and iexplore.exe at times use 100%
CPU usage. Thus slowing down things to less than a crawl. I googled
them and asked around but nothing. Some say virus and other fixes dont
seem to apply to my situation. Any ideas from the collective brain
trust?

Most often the 100% usage of any program is the result of poor error
handling sometimes caused by either an incorrect read from HD when loading
or prior damage to the program file by some type of malware. Removal of the
offender and reinstall will often cure the problem.
I have similar problem by using the approved Word2000 as a text editor for
Outlook2000. Microsoft acknowledges the problem but simply advises an
upgrade to a newer version for more money.

I would strongly suspect a virus/trojan/spyware infection. You need to
do some thorough scanning with multiple tools. I would reccomend Trend
Micro's Housecall online virus scanner, AdAware, Spybot S&D, A-Squared,
and if its still giving you fits, run hijackthis and post the logfile
here to evaluate.

Hi Mark,

How long has this been happening? Did it start after a Microsoft update or
after you installed a new program? Have you checked in MSCONFIG to see what
all is starting up and running all the time in the background?

You should know that security suites sometimes use too many resources making
computers choke. Norton, McAfee, Computer Associates, etc all require a lot
of resources. If you have a lot of memory (RAM), this will not be too much
of an issue, but with less than 1 gig then you may need to re-evaluate your
security programs.

While 512 MG of Ram should run Windows XP; once all of the programs that put
themselves into Startup and start dragging Windows down could very well
cause the symptoms you are describing.

You may also have spyware loading causing your problems. Unfortunately
sometimes the free scanners are just not up to the job anymore. Even the
paid programs do not catch all of it. If you do a lot of web surfing or if
you have clicked on a link in email, you could have some of the newer and
harder to detect malware on your computer.

Trend Micro has a free online scanner (House Call)that will scan for both
virus and spyware. Since your computer is causing the problems you describe,
you may have to go into Safe Mode to use it.
