The drivers could have been corrupted. Have you checked the Speakers
are plugged in to the computer, are switched on and have a power supply.
Here's what I suggest:
Have you gone to sound and audio devices properties in the control
panel and clicked on the voice tab - and checked that the default
device for recording and playing are correctly shown? If not select
the correct ones from the dropdown menus accessed by clicking on the
arrows. On the voice playback click on the advanced button and
ensure the correct speakers are shown, I presume that you checked the
volume was ok so I have ignored this, now click the test hardware
button. Then runs the sound hardware test wizard and the follow the
instructions, if the results are still unsatisfactory, troubleshoot
using DXDIAG.
A much overlooked diagnostic utility provided in Windows operating
systems is DXDIAG.
What is DXDIAG?
DXDiag is short for DirectX Diagnostic, designed to display the
specifications of the user's hardware, as well as test DirectX
Software, including sound and video.
What is the purpose of DXDIAG?
DXDiag can be used to view your DirectX version as well and test their
functionality and troubleshoot hardware problems. DirectX Diagnostic
can save text files with the results on the scan. These files are
often posted in tech forums or attached to support emails in order to
give support personnel a better idea of the PC the requester is using
in case the error is due to a hardware failure or incompatibility.
How do I run DXDIAG?
Quite simply by typing DXDIAG in the run box and clicking OK
More information on DXDIAG is provided by Microsoft
