This is what happened. I dowloaded the latest driver for what I
believe the device is(ac97 Realtek). All of a sudden the device is
there with no problems found. I ran DXDIAG as you suggested and came
up with the following message under sound: DirectSound test results
hresult=0x80070057 Failure step 3. I hope I downloaded the right
driver. But now after a boot of the computer it shows "no sound
device" again. I think there is a serious problem here.

Did you uninstall the old drivers first? That is normally the answer
and then to download the new drivers and install these in safe mode.
Why will people not tell us their operating system, this would make
things a lot easier, is yours windows XP?

If it is here is what I would do:

Go under Control Panel/System/Device Manager and delete all Sound
controllers and then reboot and let WinXP search for them both via the
internet and on the computer. There is a better than a 95% success
rate at correcting this issue using this method.

Just a thought you don't happen to have two sound cards?
