This is what happened. I dowloaded the latest driver for what I
believe the device is(ac97 Realtek). All of a sudden the device is
there with no problems found. I ran DXDIAG as you suggested and came
up with the following message under sound: DirectSound test results
hresult=0x80070057 Failure
step 3. I hope I downloaded the right
driver. But now after a boot of the computer it shows "no sound
device" again. I think there is a serious problem here.
