Hi Abed,
My ideas are mainly to stop using a browser with ActiveX enabled. Some web
sites like Windows Update must have ActiveX enabled, so instead of using IE,
I use Firefox and Opera, which do not have any ActiveX.
There are a number of online scanners than scan and clean for free.
Just my opinion, any program that advertizes a 'free download' then scans
but won't clean until you pay is using shady tactics. While a few of these
programs may be good at cleaning, I just won't do business with anyone who
offers 'free' but won't deliver until paid.
Spyware Warrior is a site everyone should have bookmarked or added to
Favorites.
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm
There is a long list of rogue/suspect anti-spyware products & web sites.
While not every bad or good product is listed, this advice can be found near
the bottom of the page:
"If your PC is already infested with spyware and adware, resist the
temptation to succumb to impulse buys of anti-spyware products that you see
on the Net, esp. those included in the "rogue/suspect" list on this page or
advertised on Google. Instead, you can get help online from a corps of savvy
volunteers who specialize in busting spyware."
There is a list of known good products, some free and some online scanners
that actually do find and clean system of virus and spyware.

Subject: [CHAD] About.Blank
Just to share with fellow group members.
Yesterday I was plagued with the hijacking of my home page. All explorer
would go to is About.Blank.
I am not new to PC trouble shooting but it took me few hours to get my
internet connection back and was able to surf the net again.
For those of you who are familiar with this issue, the manual method of
removing About.Blank did not work since the hidden file did not have a value
in the Registry.
I ended up purchasing (online) a program called AntiSpywareBot which was
able to clean things up for me.
Any other ideas out there?
I know I am going to see this again if not on my computer then on someone
else's.
By the way I run XP Pro SP2.
