Hello,
I am stuck. Saturday, I booted my pc and everything worked just fine. After a few hours of the pc being idle, I went to the pc to do some work and noticed is was a little sluggish so I rebooted.

After it rebooted, the screen went black right the XP Logo with the small bar that scrolls from left to right. I did a hard reboot and the same thing happened.

Here's what I tried so far to troubleshoot:

1) Removed all peripherals except hard drive, video card, RAM. Got the same results (black screen after the XP Logo).
2) Reseated the RAM (same results as #1).
3) Disconnected and reconnected the power cord from the motherboard (same results as #1).
4) Reseated video card (same results as #1).
5) Reconnected the main hard drive (same results as #1).
6) Cleared the CMOS by removing internal battery and changing jumpers on motherboard (same results as #1)
7) Placed the hard drive into another desktop as MASTER (same results as #1)
8) Same as number 7 but changed the hard drive from MASTER to SLAVE and I was able to see all the data/folders/files on the hard drive.

If the video card was bad, I don't think I would see the initial BIOS, POST at bootup and the XP logo.

What else can I try?

Does it sound like the hard drive is dying or possibly corrupt?

This is my main PC with a lot of data on it and I would like to get it back up and running again. I have my data on other hard drives in the pc but would like to fix my pc.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Vin

you can hook your drive up to another drive that is master with an operating system and try and get the data out. There might be software programs out there to help you.

I don't think this is necessarily a failing drive... I have seen this
happen when video drivers are corrupt, or the video mode is set outside
of the monitor's operating parameters.

Have you tried booting the computer into safe mode?

Power the computer on... During the POST, start pressing F8. Before
the Windows logo appears, you should see the boot menu. Select "Safe
mode" or "Safe mode with networking..."

It may take a little longer for the system to boot, but see if the
desktop finally appears. If so, re-install video drivers. Set
resolution to 800x600, and monitor's refresh rate to 60Hz.

Restart the computer and see if she boots regularly.

Hi

It sounds like it may be your video card or video drivers.
Try booting into safe mode. If it goes into safe mode,
your video drivers or your video card may be bad.
Safe mode uses generic drivers to boot.
The initial BIOS, POST at bootup and the XP logo use different
drivers then windows XP. See if there are updated drivers
for your video card.

Since you got the same results when the hard drive was placed in another
machine - that pretty much narrows it down to an OS problem (or a bad
hard drive), not hardware - thats assuming of course that the other
system was similar enough to allow it to boot in the first place.

Boot with a Win XP CD and load the recovery console and do a chkdisk /f
- if still no boot do a repair install. If that fails, pull off any
personal data, and wipe the drive and do a fresh install..

If any errors show up in the chkdisk, replace the drive asap.

It's time to put the drive in your freezer for a couple of hours and
after it's nice and cold slave it in another working PC and retrieve
your personal stuff.

I've often resorted to this method and it has worked for me almost
every time with a few exceptions.[1]

You can try partitioning, reformatting and reinstalling any OS in the
drive afterwards to verify if it's good or...not.
