I like to play Civilization III on my desktop computer. My laptop
computer is also (theoretically) capable of running the program, all
except for the resoution. The program requires minimum 16-bit 1024 X 768,
and the best the laptop's monitor can do is 800 by 600.

I did some digging around on the web, wondering if there were some
software way of emulating 1024 X 768 on an 800 X 600 monitor. No joy.
Yes, I can plug in an external monitor, but that defeats the purpose of
owning a laptop. Likewise, I could buy a newer laptop, but that defeats
the purpose of -already- owning a laptop. Besides, can't afford a new
one.

Is there such a thing? It'd probably have to act as a driver, so the
program talks to it without knowing it's in a machine without the right
specs. And free would be good.

Thanks for any pointers. And yes, if it can't be done, it can't be done.

No. It would be like trying to ride in a jet when all you own is kite.

A disclaimer on my previous reply...

Granted, it'd be Real Nice if I could afford a laptop that'd handle
adequate display resolution directly. I can't, at the moment, and for the
forseeable future.

Also, while the laptop will run the program -adequately-, that's not the
same as run it well. A faster laptop would be nice. Someday when I've
got a job better than telemarketing... OTOH, the same is true with the
desktop on which I normally play. See above as to what I can afford.

When the only tool you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. I
own a couple hammers. Someday gotta get me a nailgun, but at the
moment...

Haven't owned a kite in years, though.
