Where is the Clipboard? I am using a Dell Deminsion 2400 XP Home
Edition SP2 pc. I've always copied and pasted, but went directly from
one program to another.

Thanks for letting me ask this stupid question.

Chip

Cl;ipboard is the name given to a section of your computer's memory that
is used as a temporary storage location for your Copy/Cut and Paste
commands. If you high light a line of text with your mouse, then right
click it and click on copy, that line of text gets written into that
memory location and sits there awaiting your command to paste it
somewhere. The contents of that memory section can be viewed by running
clipbrd.exe You can start it by typing clipbrd.exe into the Run box
and hitting enter, or you can make a shortcut to it on your desktop or
put a shortcut in your start area by going to
c:windowssystem32clipbrd.exe and dragging the icon out of there.

Hi Chip,
No problem being a novice, we all had to start some place.
Anyway, back to the clip board.
Chip, when you copy something by clicking on Copy or by pressing Ctrl+C or Cut something by clicking on Cut or by pressing Ctrl+X, whatever you are copying goes automatically to an electronic clipboard.
We do not see that clipboard (there are ways to see its contents) but bear with me for a moment.
When you past what you copied or cut, by clicking Paste or pressing Ctrl+V the contents of the clipboard (the stuff you copied or cut) is transferred right away to the spot or area of your choosing.
Chip, to complicate matters a bit more, there is the system clipboard which is what you use to copy files and folders from one spot to another and a "software" clipboard which is what you use when you are in Word, Excel, Notepad etc.. which is what you use when you are copying sentences or contents of a cell in Excel or plain text in Notepad.
I am limiting my explanation to the basics of clipboard(s).
There are rules for what stays in a clipboard, how it gets cleared, can it hold more than one "item" at a time and so forth but let us not get into that at this moment unless you really need that detail.

If you have any more questions, I would be happy to answer them too.

Hope this help?

Abed

HI Chip,

Where Is The Clipboard Viewer Located In Windows XP? (Case of the Missing
Clipboard)
http://www.pencildude.com/tips/clipbook.html

CLIPBOARD UTILITIES: http://snipurl.com/clipboard_utilities

Clipboard (software) - The clipboard is a software program that is used for
short-term storage of data as it is transferred between documents or
applications, via copy and paste operations.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clipboard_(software)

About the Clipboard - A memory object on the clipboard can be in any data
format, called a clipboard format. Each format is identified by an unsigned
integer value.

The clipboard is a set of functions and messages that enable applications to
transfer data. Because all applications have access to the clipboard, data
can be easily transferred between applications or within an application.
