Hi Chip,
No problem being a novice, we all had to start some place.
Anyway, back to the clip board.
Chip, when you copy something by clicking on Copy or by pressing Ctrl+C or Cut something by clicking on Cut or by pressing Ctrl+X, whatever you are copying goes automatically to an electronic clipboard.
We do not see that clipboard (there are ways to see its contents) but bear with me for a moment.
When you past what you copied or cut, by clicking Paste or pressing Ctrl+V the contents of the clipboard (the stuff you copied or cut) is transferred right away to the spot or area of your choosing.
Chip, to complicate matters a bit more, there is the system clipboard which is what you use to copy files and folders from one spot to another and a "software" clipboard which is what you use when you are in Word, Excel, Notepad etc.. which is what you use when you are copying sentences or contents of a cell in Excel or plain text in Notepad.
I am limiting my explanation to the basics of clipboard(s).
There are rules for what stays in a clipboard, how it gets cleared, can it hold more than one "item" at a time and so forth but let us not get into that at this moment unless you really need that detail.
If you have any more questions, I would be happy to answer them too.
Hope this help?

one program to another.
Thanks for letting me ask this stupid question.
