I have been having a look at some linux programs. I downloaded
Ubuntu, but couldn't figure out how to put my internet connection
settings in. Could somebody explain what the "host" is, because I
haven't a clue. TIA.

How do you normally connect to the internet? Settings are under System>
Administration>Network. Select the connection you want to use and
select Properties. You can either set things for DHCP or specify a
static IP address and gateway.

Or do you need to run a PPPoE client? You may need to download one of
the PPPoE clients and install it. However, this is not necessary if you
have most DSL setups.

This is what worked for me, using an ADSL connection through a WAN:

(And I know SQUAT about Linux, but it worked immediately!)

***************
go into the command line (terminal) and type pppoeconf

it will ask your usernames and passwords and things. after that it will connect.

verify by typing ifconfig in the terminal and see if you have a ppp0 connection
