Thanks, Tom. Sorry for the delay - I was reinstalling my programs. I
have an ADSL connection. I know my settings and I normally just put
in my gateway address and my local internet address and the server
addresses for my IP. But Ubuntu had a field to enter "host" and I
have no idea what that meant. I also have no idea what a a PPPoE
client is... I certainly don't need that for Windows.

You can enter something in the host field that helps you to recognize
your computer or you can simply use the default. Unless your ISP
assigns static IP addresses or recognizes your computer through a
host name on their servers, the host name should have nothing to do
with your access. Your host name will be the name you see on your
local network or on your router, mostly.

Sounds like your ADSL router handles all that internally. Somewhere
along the line, ALL DSL connections require a PPPoE client to be running
on some device. In your case, it runs from the DSL router.
If your DSL router is set to act as a DHCP server, your Ubuntu box
should get an IP address automatically on boot up and all you should
need to do is open a browser or an email client. Assuming you have a
functioning Ethernet card.
If you want to see what your IP address is, go to System>Administration
>Network. there you can see what the dynamic IP is or set things to a
static IP and specify subnet mask and gateway.
