I'm sure you are right about the router "handling things". The
internet connections are a mystery to me, I have no idea whether the
the router is a DHCP server - I suspect not, but I haven't a clue.
I do not like the IP addresses being given out automatically or being
connected to the internet without me knowing about it. In windows, I
enable the LAN connection and I have an icon come up so I know when
I'm online or not. With Puppy Linux I put in my settings (gateway,
subnet, IP provider's DNS servers) and it hooked up (what it's done, I
have no idea). But the form for entering the settings in Ubuntu had
that other "host" thing (which it seemed to want...). But it was a
while ago since I tried it - I'll have another look and see if I can
get it to work. If not, I'll have some better information to come
back for advice. Thanks everyone.
