Hi
I have just started looking around for a laptop, I tried Dell.ca, but what I
added to it came out to about $1200.
Future Shop has a great deal (I think) on a "Toshiba Satellite Intel Core 2
Duo T5250 1.5GHz Laptop (A200-06V)" $500 off, cost is now $700.00 Please
see here...

I have never purchased a laptop before so I do not know much about them and
have tried to do a Google for a review for this laptop but could not find
one.
I would appreciate any advise and input. Is this a good buy? Also is there
a lot of Extra stuff I would need to purchase to be happy using a laptop. I
am looking for one because there are just too many others (kids, and
husband) using my desktop, I rarely get to use my pc, so I thought that
maybe if I bought a laptop for myself I might have a chance to get online
;)
The only thing I am really bothered about is that it has Microsoft Vista
Home Premium loaded - mainly because I have not heard a lot of good things
about Vista, but I have not tried it.
Thanks,
Debbie

Hi Debbie,
That seems like a good deal; it could use more RAM. Vista will work ok and
if all you want to do is read email, surf and maybe word processing, it
should be fine. If you work with graphics it will be slow. I use an external
mouse, but that is my preference. Everything you need should come with the
laptop.
I have been using Vista since February and while it did take me a little
while (about two weeks) to get used to it and find where it has moved stuff,
I like it.
There are always naysayers about every new OS. The biggest problem is
because most of us don't like change, even though we say we do. The most
complaints I've heard about Vista is the UAC (user access control). People
griped because XP isn't safe, so UAC was added to make it safer and now
people are griping about that. Sometimes it does get 'in your face', but
once you get your computer setup with the programs you want, it doesn't
happen all that often. It is a protection from most malware being installed
without your knowledge.
There are some issues with hardware not working and folks are griping about
that as well. Printer manufactures are declining to write new drivers for
Vista because they want to sell new printers. This happened when XP first
came on the scene as well. Sooner or later, Vista will be it, just like XP
is today. Eventually support for XP will be phased out.
Toshiba makes good laptops, so I've heard. I have never used one.
Did you search Dell for a similar configuration? You can also call them and
get help.

Hi Martha,
Thanks for the input, I thought the same about the RAM, I have more on my
desktop now running XP than that laptop. You are right about Vista versus
XP, I remember all the "BAD" things said about XP when it first came out.
And after using others' laptops, I would definitely buy a separate mouse.
This is what I had picked from the Dell site.... (2 GB RAM)
Inspiron 1520, IntelR CoreT 2 Duo T5250 (2MB cache/1.5GHz/667Mhz FSB),
English, Genuine Windows VistaR Home Premium Edition, English
Total price for the Dell $1197.00. Either way $700 or $1200 is still a lot
of money so I don't think that I will jump into this yet.
Thanks, Debbie

I recently bought a Toshiba Satellite A215-S7422 at Office Depot. $700
with a $150 rebate. Good solid laptop. 1GB RAM and a 160GB harddrive.
15" wide screen with a very nice picture. Yes, it has Windows Vista
but at least everything is made for Vista, so it all works quite well.
Also has a DVD writer, modem, NIC and built-in wireless.
It has the AMD dual core Turion CPU at 1.90GHz. See the specs at this link:
http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/rdet.jsp?poid=393782&seg=HHO
For something a bit higher end, there's the Lenovo 3000 N200 which comes
with XP Professional if you don't want to go to Vista yet.

In terms of RAM, I just ordered a 2GB kit (2 x 1GB) for that Toshiba for
$84.79 from Crucial. The way memory prices are right now, I'd buy with
the minimum and then order more from Crucial's website.

I bought a new laptop .. its a Hp Pavilion Entertainment Pc .. the only real problem I have had with it is it has a separate place to store the backup and restore files and it has said right from the first day I had it that ( there isn't enough disk space ) don't think I have gotten a restore yet. I purchased it about 1 1/2 hours from here and will take it back next time I need to go that way .. I have had it about 3 weeks ... if anyone knows something I can do to fix it myself I sure would appreciate it .. thanks

Hi Debbbie,
I have 1 Averatec and 4 Toshiba notebooks here that I'm very happy
with.
About 3 months ago, at Office Depot, I bought a Toshiba Satellite
A135-S4527 US$539.99 after rebate + got a free Canon Pixma MP160 all-
in-one printer. Just checked and they are cheaper now at Office
Depot; Item #: 520185, $649.99 with a $150 mail in rebate and a free
Canon Pixma MP160 all-in-one printer after rebate. The package is
$499.99 after rebates.
As all TSA groups are Child-Safe Sites Labeled with ICRA, I can't
really say what I want to about Gateway, so I'll keep it mild. I
also purchased, at Circuit City, a Gateway GTW-MX6453 for US$1049
($999 after rebate with a free Lexmark all in one printer). Gateway
is the worst piece of junk I ever owned! Their Customer service
Dept. should be renamed "Customer Dis-service"! NEVER buy Gateway!!!

Look in the program menu under HP. There should be a program where you
can create restore CD's. It is only available once, so if someone tried
to use it and failed or created the restore CD's before you got it and
kept them, you won't be able to make any for yourself. This often
happens with display models.
Usually, you can contact HP and get them to send you restore CD's for
free if the system is still under warranty. Call Customer Service.

thank you Tom .. I did create a restore disk on a dvd when I first got it but on xp doesn't it keep creating them now and then so you don't have to loose everything? This is Vista and maybe it works differently
