Sound not working properly

I have a friend who tells me his computer stopped putting out sound as
it should. He says that the speakers are working and that he knows
that they are because any Windows related beeps or chimes are heard
through them. He cannot hear any sound from his DVD drive while
watching a movie, nor can he hear anything off the web, such as
youtube.com.

I asked if he checked the volume controls, and he said that all
controls are set to the max. What could cause this behavior? Are
Windows "sounds" routed differently than audio off a website or DVD?
This unit has an integrated soundcard.
