If you mean a POST card it wont work if the machine wont go to POST from a short. All I do is incorporate the blown PS into the bill either directly or tied to the replacement parts, depends on the customer and if they want to have the work done by me or just junk it and buy a new machine. I also bill them for labor since I did have to show up (or put it on the bench whichever the case is) so they arent totally free and clear. Most go with the generic whitebox barebones machine - just a PS, case, mobo and cpu and we use what we can of the old, or in many cases upgrade. One had a DVDrom and CD burner, found it was a few dollars more to add a dual layer DVD/CD burner and put the DVDrom/Cd burner in as a secondary drive. They also generally get a warranty on the barebones from the vendor it's bought from so they feel better and have a more up to date machine. I usually reuse their OS and use a heat gun to remove the COA from the old box and put it on the new and in the case that authentication fails due to new hardware it's merely a call to MS to reset as the OS is not part of the original machine but rather licensed to the owner and can be transferred as long as it is used on one machine only. I called one time and Hapu gave me some lip so I demanded to speak to Microsoft's legal department and all of a sudden I got a call center supervisor who told me that Hapu was mistaken and they reset the authentication.

I used to try the cpu in another machine until I blew up one I had ready to sell. No more of that, I go with a new barebones or at least new cpu and mobo, usually a PS as well so I'm only $20 to $30 off from a classy new case as well - that's why the barebones usually sells over the parts and in many cases you can find vendors with assembled and warranted barebones for the same or less than a mobo and CPU.

Are any of the capacitors on that motherboard swollen or leaking? Some OEMs are recalling boards due to failed caps, including board makers like Soyo.

Ok Russ, thanks, that’;s a new one on me. Now I feel a lot less guilty about them paying me for the blown power supply.

How does someone ‘test’ a CPU or mother board to make sure this doesn̵7;t happen again? Do those all in one tester PCI cards do any good? Obviously, the next time I run into the -12 volt thing I’ll know not to just toss in another power supply, tho.

Thanks again,

Bruce

Likely a short, CPU possibly. If it is it can surely kill/short the -12 section but the HDD and fans run fine since they use the +12 section. Likely blew a voltage regulator. I would try the memory in another machine to see if it/they are good and then get them a new mobo and cpu and toss those before wasting more power supplies. Havent had any Intel cpu's do that but I have had AMDs do it on rare occasions all the back to the K5 era.

Ok any ideas for this..

Go to a non working Pc. I find it STILL running almost 5 days after I get the call for help? No video. I shut it down, try another monitor. Still no video, Open it up. Start it up CPU fans runs for a couple seconds then dies. Take it back to my place, Power Supply tester shows no -12 volts light. So I think the Ps is dead. Buy a new Antec 350ish power supply. Install that and same deal. Starts for a second, but then the CPU fan quits and I never get any video. Unhook it try my tester and once again, no -12 volts light? Wasn’;t smart enough to test it BEFORE I tried installing it? It’s an Antec, I figured I was good to go? I then put together a motherboard and video ram setup powered up with that power supply, still no video, but the CPU fan runs constantly, like it should?

Fortunately, the Hd was still good, I got his QuickBooks off that and installed to a new system fine.

Never had a Pc kill a new power supply before? Any ideas?

Bruce
