I see a lot of activity for trackback spam here lately.
Currently I have
set my trackbacks to moderated because of that. I am
blocking at the
firewall a lot of IPs that I've seen sending
trackback/comment spam and
that are known IP blocks of spammers. I also block what I
presume are
stealth bots who look for trackback/comment spam
opportunities.
I'm also blocking some User Agent Strings in apache. With
all of that
I'm down to about 1 - 5 trackback spams a day. But it's a
stupid game.
It's much easier to fight against comment spam: one can
filter on
content, use captchas (not to my liking), use simple
measures like
requiring "Preview" (in latest COREBlog
release), they get rid of a lot
of comment spam. But trackback is harder, because it's
*meant* to be
automated. As far as I have found, the only plugin to deal
with that is
one that looks up the page that does the trackback - it
tries to find if
there is really a link to you and flags the trackback as
spam otherwise.
Sadly there seems to be a trend to switch off trackback
completely.
As first measure I would suggest switching on moderation for
trackback.
Regards,
Sascha

I am already doing that, since day 0, but I'll still get
the mail and I have
to clean my server periodically, carefull of not deleting
real trackbacks.
Anyway, I think I'll turn it off; untill coreblog has
captchas for it. I am
happy with that solution (I think).
Thank you.

No, we are also receiving a lot of spam in our COREBlog
communities, but
we have some scripts to do the "bad job" of
deleting this spam.
You can also close the tracbacks in your post to avoid spam.

Mikel

How could captchas ever be a solution for trackbacks? For
comments,
yes, but trackbacks? Or do I misunderstand you?
Cheers,

No, I forgot what trackbacks were about for a second.

Can you share does scripts ? Are they for coreblog ?

I receive about 10 fake trackbaks for one of my entries.
Fortunately,
spam-bots seem to ingore other entries at my blog.

Those scripts were already discussed here, you'll find a
reference here:
http://www
.eibar.org/blogak/luistxo/en/298
We just adapted those scripts with some common spamwords
(viagra,
casino, ...) to check them automatically instead of calling
the script
each time with a new keyword.

Mikel
