I've been working for the past week or so on a JavaScript
licensing widget
that has been suggested on our wiki
<http://
wiki.creativecommons.org/JsWidget>. It's a new way
to integrate
CC licensing into your web application. It's really as easy
as pie: Just
add the following tag somewhere in the body:

<script src="http://api.creativecommons.org/jswidget/tags/0
.1/complete.js"
/>

and a CC licensing widget will appear. Your web application
can then use
regular DOM queries to determine the user's choice.

NOTE that this is not ready for prime-time use! I want
feedback on what
people would like us to add or change. Right now it serves
only
English-language text; in the future you will be able to do

src=".../complete.js?locale=", stick your language
code at the end, and
get text back in your language. Beyond translation, tell me
how else I
can be of service!

You can download a trivial sample application and a long-ish
README at our
SourceForge project:
http://sourceforge.net/project/
showfiles.php?group_id=80503&package_id=239510
. For y'all's (in)convenience I've attached the README
here, too.

It'll take you all of five minutes to deeply understand
what's going on,
so I suggest you do if you're thinking about (or if you
already are)
offering CC licensing to users of web applications you work
on.

P.S. Hi everyone, I was an intern last summer but now I'm a
real tech guy
at CC. Pleased to meet you all!

Actually, until two hours ago, that JS link didn't work.
Now it does - so
please try again!

Also, check out a demo I've put on the web (note that
labs-dot is a
different domain than api-dot, and that this demo works in
accordance with
the domain-based web browser security model:

http://labs.creativecommons.org/jswidget/tags/
0.1/example_web_app/

Thanks to Jon Phillips for asking for an example and making
sure
with me that it worked.

Announcing JsWidget 0.2

JsWidget 0.2 is now up. New features include:

* Actual translated text for about half of the UI (try
?lang=fr)
* Stopped asking users questions that only affect retired
licenses

Those are the important changes that come to mind. There
are some other
changes behind the scenes, too, of course. You can play
with a sample
instance at
http://labs.creativecommons.org/jswidget/tags/
0.2/example_web_app/ , and
SourceFrog has a download link for you at
http://sourceforge.net/project/
showfiles.php?group_id=80503&package_id=239510 .

As always, I welcome comments back to me personally or to
the list! I've
also updated http://wiki.
creativecommons.org/JsWidget to reflect the
current state, so you'll always be able to track this
project there.

Yeah. I'll see if I can get Alex to look into the styling.
That's
definitely not my area of expertise.

my day ;)

It's a sudo-typo. (-;

JSWidget IE help (WAS Re: Announcing JsWidget 0.2)
user name

In JsWidget, I'd like it to work as well as possible in
every browser.
So I started testing in Internet Explorer, and it seems to
have a strange
issue where it refuses to parse everything after (and
including) the
<script> tag. See for yourself by loading this link
in IE:

http://labs.creativecommons.org/jswidget/trunk/ex
ample_web_app/

Everything from the <script> tag onwards doesn't seem
to render in the
Internet Explorer browsers I have access to, both versions 6
and 7.

Maybe someone on this list who knows IE well could give me a
hand? If not
I'll keep stabbing in the dark....

Thanks a lot!
